I wrote “The Potter’s Hands” because so many people think they can’t come to God until they “clean up” their lives and stop doing the “bad things.” God wants us to come to Him just as we are.

The Potter’s Hands

The idea for this poem came from one of my pastor’s sermons. So many people think that they can’t come to God until they “clean up” their lives and stop doing the “bad things.” God wants us to come to Him just as we are. Once we give ourselves to Him, the work really begins. As long as we will let Him, God will keep working in us. His whole purpose and desire is to see us become more and more like Him.

But now, O LORD, You [are] our Father; We [are] the clay, and You our potter; And all we [are] the work of Your hand. (Isaiah 64:8)

O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay [is] in the potter’s hand, so [are] ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. (Jeremiah 18:6)
