An abortion is final. You cannot take it back. You cannot change your mind. I Wish I Could Have Known You is one of two poems dealing with my abortion. Before you take that final step, please reach out to and talk with a pro-life organization or an adoption agency. An internet search will bring up lists of both and a phone book should also list local organizations and agencies.
I had an abortion
This poem and one other poem in this book deal with this issue. Both these poems were extremely hard to write. I avoided working on this book for a long time after writing the two poems because of how difficult this page for each poem was going to be. Abortion isn’t mentioned in the Bible. But scripture clearly states that God created and formed us in the womb and knew us from the time of conception. Exodus 21:22-23 details the punishment for causing a woman to lose/miscarry her unborn child – proof that God considered an unborn child a person and that life was and is created at the moment of conception.
Because I gave my life to Christ many years ago, I know heaven is my final home. With this knowledge comes the realization that I will see my child again. I began to wonder what our meeting would be like, what the child might say to me. I both dread and look forward to that meeting.
Bible Verses
If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life (Exodus 21:22-23)
Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, (Isaiah 44:2a)
Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, (Isaiah 44:24a)
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; (Jeremiah 1:5a)
